Your first driving lesson can be extremely intimidating. You tend to get overwhelmed with the process of getting it right, and to impress your driving instructor. In order to get the most out of your driving experience, it’s important for you to keep your calm and stay patient.
Your driving instructor is there to guide you and determine the pace of your learning. You may be determined to show them you’re serious about driving but taking too much pressure in doing so can only ruin your chances of proving yourself to them. Follow their instructions carefully, keep your eye on the road, and most of all—stay focused.
Here are some ways to show your driving instructor you mean business:
1. Persevere through it all
We all admire people who persevere through it all and don’t give up until they reach their goal. When it comes to your driving lesson, you want to show your instructor you’re willing to give your shortcomings and mistakes another shot, because you want to be a good driver.
For instance, if you hit the brakes abruptly or mount a curb, ask if you can give it another try. Remember that you’re allowed to make mistakes, so don’t dwell on them and carry on confidently.
2. Be cautious, even when you’re confident
Oftentimes, beginner drivers find it difficult to strike a balance between both. Your driving instructor certainly wants you to be confident but wouldn’t want you to overdo it and risk your safety (or theirs). Don’t speed or miss a car because you’re so determined to get going. This can also show them that you’re not yet ready to drive without supervision.
3. Always be on time
To make a good first impression, always arrive at your driving lessons on time. This will show your instructor you’re taking it seriously and will get you started on the right foot.
Make sure you arrive at least 10–20 minutes early.
4. Mirror checks
A lack of observation will not put you in a positive light. It’s extremely crucial for you to keep a check on your mirrors, as this will show your instructor that you’ve paid attention to their lessons and are focused.
Mirror checks are necessary when you’re changing gears, approaching potential hazards, starting your car, and so on.
