Do you happen to feel the anxiety rise at the thought of driving as the sun sets? Driving during the night tends to be a cause of concern for many drivers even after years of experience.

With some simple tips, you can stay safe and out of harm’s way.

High beam- A big ol’ NO!

Driving with high beams will throw off oncoming traffic, putting you and others at risk. High beams also reflect into the eyes of the car ahead of you, impairing their vision as well. You will feel like the stronger lights will help you see the road better but it makes driver around you more uncomfortable and therefore you may not be as safe as you imagined in this situation.

It was a blur

This is not a good enough reason when you are in control of a vehicle. Keep all windows glass surfaces clean while driving. Any substances on the front of back windscreen’s can obstruct your view of the road ahead or behind. Even the slightest blur on these surfaces are a cause for concern.

Look out for other cars

A great tip to practice while driving at night is to keep a keen eye on the cars ahead of you. Their backlights will help you determine what is coming ahead, be it a speed breaker or a right turn. Staying on the lookout in this case will cause you to stay alert if a car’s break lights turn on or if its reverse lights turn on.

Panel lights

Now with digital speedometers, our panel lights have become brighter and flashier. Their reflection can be quite distracting, causing you to lose focus on the road. Our advice is to keep panel lights to a minimum so that all your attention is on the road. Turn them back up for effect, when you’re not driving, obviously!

Anticipate movements

While driving at night it can be very difficult to spot something at a distance. In order to overcome this, anticipate what is going on ahead of you. If you are driving by a club or restaurant at night, you know that there are going to be people on the sidewalk or crossing the road; slow down. Yawning at the wheel? You need a cab!

If you feel or show signs of tiredness, you must take some other sort of transport. If not for yourself, then at least for the safety for others. It’s quite reasonable to assume that the darkness of the night can induce sleep and you must be sure that you are fully awake and have all your reflexes intact.
