Finally getting your driver’s license is an exhilarating feeling. That freedom of not having to rely on anyone for getting from A to B is unlike any other. Before you get onto the roads for the first time on your own, there are some things to be aware of.

Being distracted

Driving requires 100% focus. Early morning commuters are known to be applying their makeup or fixing their ties in the car. Cell phones are the number one distraction! A driver doesn’t necessarily have to be texting or receiving a phone call; even changing the music on their phone is a distraction.

Take control of the environment you create in your car. Put your phone on silent, turn the vibration off too. Place your cell phone in the dashboard so that you’re not tempted to check it. Get ready in advance so you don’t have to pull any stunts by getting ready while driving.

Risky driving

Always use your indicators when making turns so that the cars behind you anticipate your turn. If you feel that your vehicle is acting up—that is, your vehicle is vibrating/shaking, etc.—switch on your hazards, so that vehicles behind you are warned to keep a fair distance.

Overcrowding

A common mistake made by new drivers is that they overcrowd their cars. As bleak as it sounds, teen drivers are at a high risk for fatal car crashes. 34,439 fatal motor vehicle crashes were reported in 2016.

Closely tailing a car

Getting stuck behind a slow driver is annoying for sure, but it’s always best to keep distance between the two cars. If the vehicle in front of you decided to hit the brakes immediately, you have enough time to react.

Getting bullied by fellow drivers

As a new driver, you’re probably nervous being on the road. It takes some getting used to. Fellow drivers may not always understand that you’re new at this. There will be instances where drivers may be a bit aggressive and rude, blowing the horn for you to move faster.

Don’t pay any heed to it. Don’t over speed or drive at a speed you’re not comfortable with. You could potentially lose control of the vehicle.
