A majority of U.S states have a points system in place for moving violations and collisions. Tickets issued and points added to your license are closely monitored by the state’s DMV. They keep a check on your infractions, i.e. earning too many points in a short time results in the suspension of your license.
Not all States practice license points, however, it is to their discretion if they want to revoke or suspend a license. The points earned on your license can also affect the premium you pay on your insurance.
What are driver’s license points?
Points are added to an individual’s license every time a traffic violation is caught. Traffic violations include speeding, texting while driving, driving under the influence, crashes, and illegal turns.
Arizona’s points system
Arizona is one of the strictest States when it comes to points and tickets. You can get anywhere from 2 to 8 points depending on the violation.
DUIs, extreme DUIs, reckless, and aggressive driving are charged 8 points each. Hit and runs and fatal crashes cost an individual 6 points. A crash resulting in serious injury results in 4 points. Speeding and parking in the gore area are 3 points, while other moving violations are given 2 points.
Car insurance
A lesser known fact about automobile insurance is that companies don’t look at actual points earned on a license to determine the premium.
Insurance companies conduct their own methods of deducing the optimal premium from each customer. Each company has their own policy and check every customer’s driver history. A customer with a history of traffic violations and at-fault collisions are charged higher insurance rates.
Can you remedy points on your license?
Once you’ve earned points on your license, it’s time for damage control. Drivers who are close to license suspension, or want to get points removed from their record can look into defensive driving courses.
Defensive driving is a course provided at certain driving schools to dismiss a violation before it shows on record. It’s important to mention that defensive driving won’t work on points earned for major offenses like DUIs.
Red-light camera and points
Usually, you get a ticket for running a red light, in addition to points. Some states may not give you points at all. Arizona, however, charges drivers 2 points for red-light tickets whether you were caught by law enforcement of a traffic cam.
